99% Searches are made in top three search engines, namely, Google, Yahoo ( Altavista ) and MSN ( live ). 60% of them are made in Google alone. so you need to submit your site only in top three search engines, and most importantly in Google. Don't use any software or website which claims to submit your site 1000s of search engines even if it is free, It may have adverse effect on your site's Google rating ( called Pagerank).There are three ways to submit your URL to search engine:-
1. Submitting your URL manually in each search engine ( I will recommend you submit in top 3 at least, links are given in resources )
2. List your blogs or websites in relevant directories in most relevant category. Directories are good source of traffic as well as they increase the visibility of your website for top search engines. Just submit your site to free online directories and classifieds manually.

3. Use Social bookmarking websites to spread your articles. Periodically write useful and fresh articles and make them popular in interested people. it will improve all brand, traffic, customers and search engine positions.
Yes uploading a website on a poor server (free server) affects negatively your page rank in google.Hope it helps
